Celluloid Turkey Day
By Dan on Nov 20, 2007 in Blog, Family, Movies
My wife and I, who I would never deign to refer to as “the Mrs.”, have a special Thanksgiving Day tradition. After the kids have drifted off to sleep, we watch a movie. But not just any movie, we reserve this holiday for one of the classics. Past selections have included Breakfast at Tiffany’s, On the Waterfront, and Roman Holiday.
I’ve been charged with renting this year’s feature and would very much like some recommendations. The movie should pre-date my existence (1966) and it’s been suggested that it be romantic in nature. Black-and-white is preferable, but we will consider Technicolor. If you want to suggest a particular wine or beer to accompany the film, that would be super.
Look at the jaw line! She should be in a Gap commercial.
My vote would be for either “Charade” or “Some Like It Hot,” both of which serve up some other nice genre side dishes with their romance. Or, if you’ve seen “SLIH” and still want some Billy Wilder-Jack Lemmon greatness, try “The Apartment.” The only knock against “Charade,” given your criteria, is that it’s in color.
As for wine, we bought a bottle called, I think, 14 Hands (or something like that) at the Corkscrew last week. Robust red. Good stuff.

Dang. Nick beat me to “The Apartment”. As soon as you qualified your query with pre-1966 and romantic comedy, that popped into my head. Plus, there are lots of laughs.
You could also go with…
Sabrina (the original)
Desk Set
Roman Holiday
The Philadelphia Story
or The Shop Around the Corner
And might I suggest a nice Dogfish Head IPA. It is spectacular.

My vote is The Philadelphia Story. Another Cary Grant movie that is good is Houseboat, with Sophia Loren-but this one is also in color. I’m not much of a wine connisseur, but I always like the ones with great names, like Angry Housewife(totally not directed at you Tammy, that’s just the only one to come to mind right away, I swear.)

A little late and I’m not sure it exactly fits your criteria but “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” is an excellent show with some of the best dialogue I have ever heard.
Wine sucks.
