I am not the king of my castle!

A quick look at the accommodations on Super Bowl Sunday reveals who the VIPs are in my house.

The kids relax in luxury while taking in a showing of Madagascar on the house’s largest television. The room is tastefully decorated and offers free wireless Internet.

At game time, Victor and I are shown to the laundry room where we watch the action on a 20-inch TV while sitting in folding chairs. The easel on the left allows us to draw-up plays during time-outs, which we decline to do. That’s Aimee Mann over the TV, where you might expect a picture of the Virgin Mary or JFK in a more traditional Catholic home.
I was wrong about the Pats, by the way, but I’m okay. I washed a killer load of laundry during the game.
If that’s a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale sitting on the washing machine next to the remote, you have nothing to bitch about.

Hopefully, you didn’t confuse the SNPA with the Tide. Or Cheer. Or Biz. Or Fab. Or Gain. etc.

You are not alone, Dan. I felt pretty lucky to get the t.v. for 3 hours straight on a Sunday evening when usually I am trying to “be a good parent” by actually playing with the kids without the t.v. on or with it tuned into Disney or TeenNick. Of course that didn’t prevent 3 games of Sorry and a game of UNO Spin from taking my attention away from the commercials and the game! I feel your pain…

Seems a far cry from the Bills-Cowboys, circa 1993, slugging gin and vodka like there was no tomorrow, listening to alternative music at a mind numbing volume and wondering about attempting work the next day. Ouch.

Reality is humbling,no? I love your honesty, and I know my husband would agree. Gone are the glory day, all-day sports marathons uninterrupted. Hearing our two daughters beg Daddy to turn off football, “so we can watch a kids show” is a common theme in our house, and yep, they’re in the big screen room too, with dad in the cold basement 18 inch.
You are not alone, you are not king of your castle, but you are a GREAT dad!
