Tautiška Giesmė

I was roundly mocked when I took to the Bocce Ball field on Saturday evening, this despite my earlier display of prowess. The "Lithuanian Master" they called out, derisively. Well, I promised that I wouldn’t boast, but rest assured that when darkness fell, the ridiculing had ceased. Join me, won’t you, in a rendition of the Lithuanian National Anthem as we hail the champion.

Lithuania, our homeland,
Land of heroes!
Let your sons draw their strength
From our past experience

Let your children always follow
Only roads of virtue,
May your own, mankind’s well-being
Be the goals they work for

May the sun above our land
Banish darkening clouds around
Light and truth all along
Guide our steps forever

May the love of Lithuania
Brightly burn in our hearts.
For the sake this land
Let unity blossom

Once again, in the mother tongue:

Lietuva, Tėvyne mūsų,
Tu didvyrių žeme,
Iš praeities Tavo sūnūs
Te stiprybę semia.

Tegul Tavo vaikai eina
Vien takais dorybės,
Tegul dirba Tavo naudai
Ir žmonių gėrybei.

Tegul saulė Lietuvoj
Tamsumas prašalina,
Ir šviesa, ir tiesa
Mūs žingsnius telydi.

Tegul meilė Lietuvos
Dega mūsų širdyse,
Vardan tos Lietuvos
Vienybė težydi!

  1. I’m not familiar with this bocce ball. Is there any sprinting involved?

  2. I’ve seen the Italanians slinging the bocci ball down here on the “Hill” in St. Louis, but never the Lithuanians. Any similarities to the great Italian game? Practice Dan, just practice. You’re quite the athlete, it should come naturally.

  3. Yeah, yeah – congrats….BUT this was the Lithuanian version of Bocce – played by randomly throwing balls around a rocky terrain and hoping for the best. Skill is required in the traditional Italian game. Somebody needs to roll their lawn.

  4. It was my first venture off the hardwood oiled lanes into this Fred Flintstone quarry my friend calls his backyard. If anyone has many a 5 tons rolling machine I can send you his address. I am openly challenging any of these so called lawn bowling experts to another game, cept it will actualy take place on a well manicured patch of grass….hard hats and pooper scoopers can be left at home
