Why bother?

I Run!
They said it couldn’t be done. They said that I’d never beat "the Trail". But what I tell  you, my friends, is the truth. On Saturday,  midmorning, I faced down the Lost Bridge Trail and then proceeded to run its entire length. To Rochester and back. Ten miles! The pavement was treacherous and its inclines unforgiving. Yet I would not be denied. I ran farther than I had ever run before. My knees ache still. It took me the entire two disc set of Wilco’s Being There album, plus three cuts off of Summer Teeth. But I finished in a runner’s pace. The half marathon awaits.

Shady Grove
If you find yourself transporting kids hither and yon on Saturday afternoons, tune in to the Shady Grove show on WQNA. It’s a fine bluegrass program that’s already introduced me to the Drive By Truckers and the Old Crow Medicine Show. This past Saturday, it got me to iPod a great Steve Earle song: I’m Looking Through You.

Go!Psunami
Save for a quick stout I picked up after receiving  my graduate degree at the PCCC, this weekend I made my first appearance at the Brewhaus in close to a decade. The occasion was a rare night on the town and a recommendation from a friend of a friend to check out a band. It was well worth the babysitting money.

Go! Psunami is a surf rock band in the great California/Japan tradition. I’ll admit to being skeptical going in. I like my rock wordy and have always written off instrumental rock bands as novelties that lose their appeal by halfway into a set. But I must say that I was held captivated throughout Go!Psunami’s entire performance. Maybe it was the old hockey masks they all sported, maybe it was the Dick Dale influence, but there was a definite Tarantino vibe radiating throughout the Haus. I’ll definitely go see them again, and you should too.

Opening for the G!P were the Moonlight Rhythm Rangers who were also very good and they even played my favorite Belinda Chaire song. I still have a BC t-shirt that I wear from time to time.

Railyard
After dining on mostaccioli at SHG, some friends, frequenters of the state of Wisconsin, invited us back to sample some brew they had bootlegged back on their last trip  up north. They brought back back two varietals, but I was particularly smitten by a stouty ale goes by the name of Railyard. It comes from the Titletown Brewing Company and if you’re not averse to beers with flavor, I highly recommend stopping by Byron’s house and asking him to hook you up.

See Fernando
If Shoo’s hit count seems awfully high this past week, it’s because my kids have been all over his Pancake Mountain post. The kids really love the Tegan and Sara clip, but I’m partial to the Jenny Lewis offering. So I’ll leave you with that:

  1. If you go directly to YouTube, there’s a Pancake Mountain channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/pancakemountain).

Okay, if you were at the Lost Bridge Trail on Saturday, who was that that looked suspiciously like you and waved at me in Washington park?

  2. It was probably Steve Buscemi.

  3. Seriously, I didn’t know Steve Buscemi ran?

  4. Dan-

Way to go on the running, man. I admire people who like to run. Or at least who have the testicular fortitude to make themselves do it. I love working out, but I hate running. A lot of bad memories I’d rather not dig up.

Glad to hear you’ve discovered Drive By Truckers. A friend of mine turned me on to them back in 04, and I’ve been a fan since. Internet Archive has an extensive archive of DBT live shows. Some of the shows from 04 are incredible (the band in its prime IMO). There’s also an acoustic show from Cooley’s house in ‘04 that is very unique. It may be my favorite DBT show ever.

  5. Dan,

WTG on the running. Wow. I love how awesome I feel after a run…but I LOVE how I awesome I feel laying in bed on a Saturday morning not running.

It’s sick and self deprecating, I know.

    Congrats anyway,

    Case

  7. Thanks John. I’ll check that out this evening.

Casey, after about seven miles, I was wishing I had stayed in bed.

  8. Dan,

Great job on the running! I also ran 10 miles this past weekend, and the most I’d run to that point this year was 6. I was one of those that did Chicago last year - ugh. I might just see you out at the half marathon this year, and maybe in Chicago for the whole 26.2?

  9. Brian,

I know I won’t be up for Chicago this year, and I’m not sure there’s a marathon in my future. After seeing my wife’s toenails fall off last year, it kind of turned me off to the idea. The half marathon may be as far as I ever run.

    Thanks for commenting,
    Dan

  10. Dan,

If toenails falling off was the worst thing that happened to Mrs. BFS, then she was in pretty good shape. C’mon, what’s a couple of toenails? Maybe after the half you’ll want to see if you can go further. Hope to see you at the half! I’ll be somewhere in the back of the pack at the rate I’m going.
